Working with the BPMN team

Engage the whole team in modeling discussions with this easy low-tech, high-touch way of hands-on modeling using printed magnets or self-sticking sheets printed with the standard graphical elements (or shapes) in the BPMN specification.

Work with your hands: Using the printed shapes of the elements allows an individual or a collaborative team to physically move the icons while discussing a new business model concept. In an interactive team environment you facilitate hands-on modeling and simulation of processes or systems to get group buy-in BEFORE you use your modeling software.

The graphic shapes come in two sizes: 6"x4" and 3.5" square, so they are easy for everybody in your group to see.

Why are we offering these cool BPMN Templates?

Here's what happened...

Shortly after the launch of BPMN Modeling and Reference Guide (by Stephen A. White, PhD and Derek Miers), we introduced the concept called “Hands-On Modeling^©” using Whiteboard Magnets for Business Process Modeling. It was a really cool idea.

The fridge-style magnets were printed with the individual graphical elements (icons) of the software modeling specification BPMN — the topic of the book BPMN Modeling and Reference Guide. You probably saw the whiteboard magnets used at BPM conferences and industry events.

The whiteboard magnets came in two sets and were popular particularly with corporate groups and consultants.

Core Set (14 unique elements and 88 pieces) offering the most-frequently used elements
Full Set offering all 38 unique elements with a total of 290 pieces for very detailed hands-on modeling.

But, bad news, our stock is now completely sold out!

**Now for the really bad news...** The new cost of sourcing our custom printed magnets has made the selling price completely prohibitive — over $227 for only the Core Set. This cost only $99 previously. We are extremely upset with our suppliers!

We can no longer supply the pre-printed Whiteboard Magnets, sorry.

Wait! There is actually some really good news--we're making the artwork and templates available so you can create your own in-house sets of either the Core Set and the Full Set for less than a tenth of that price! You don’t have to spend $199.00 to get the full set.

What's in the Set of Templates?

1. Print-ready artwork.
38 unique elements (Hi-Res JPG format) in two sizes of icons 3.5” square and 6”x4” rectangle divided into TWO sets:

Core Set (most frequently used) of 14 unique elements which (printed to recommended quantity of each shape) produces 88 pieces.
Full Set (absolutely every element in the BPMN spec) of all 38 unique elements which produces 290 pieces of the recommended quantity per shape.

The number in the filename indicates how many copies you should print of that shape to model a typical process. Example: IE-Link-Throw-5.jpg means print 5 copies of this shape, but it's easier to use our handy layouts with the required number ready to be printed

2. Handy Layout Templates of the Core Set in two documents:

a. Multiple shapes per page: 11-pages of layout templates (PDF) of the Core Set to make the best use of your Dry Erase self-stick sheet or magnetic sheet with instructions of how many of each shape to print.

Print Hint: To print all shapes in the recommended quantities, you will need 22 sheets total for a basic core set of shapes.

Self Sticking Dry Erase Sheets

Self-Stick Dry Erase Sheets, 11 x 8-1/2, 25 Sheets per Box

Use your regular ink-jet printer to print the shapes onto sheets of Self Sticking Dry Eraser Sheets using our handy layout guides included in your download.

Cut out the shapes. Stick them on the wall, move them, write on them, discuss the process - have fun. These templates are really cool.

Cool Hint: We found the Dry Eraser Sheets particularly useful because you can hand customize the printed shapes with writing on them with a marker and erase later.

Turn your wall into a portable whiteboard!

DRY ERASE SHEETS ROLLS 24 X 10

Very useful for laying out longer modeling simulations. Use several rolls next to each other in a line, or above/below for sub-processes..

The Dry Erase Sheets let you turn any surface into a dry erase board. Markers are guaranteed to not bleed through, and the self-stick removable sheets erase easily. The sheets are also laser printer and copier compatible.

Pro: Convenient for travel, packable, lightweight. Add additional rolls for additional processes.

Con: Wear out after a few months of heavy use.

Cool idea! When the session is over, simply roll up the whole sheet (carefully) complete with sticky shapes still in place and go back to your computer to engage your modeling software.

Magnetic Sheets

For a sturdier, more permanent set of the BPMN process modeling elements, print the shapes onto thin magnetic sheets using your regular printer. These are the kind we had bulk custom-printed.

Pro: Very durable, long-lasting. Print safely with regular ink-jet. Easy to cut using a pair of scissors or a paper cutter (guillotine).

Con: Bit inconvenient for traveling because even just the Core Set (88 pieces) is quite heavy and you don't want magnets tucked in next to your laptop.

Buying Hint: Order enough sheets to print the recommended quantity of each shape. See to the left for "What's in the Set?"
